Brasil Telecom Participações SA is one of the fixed-line telecommunications companies that resulted from the breakup and privatisation of Telebrás by the Brazilian Federal Government in 1998. In the privatisation process, Brasil Telecom was allocated all the share capital held by Telebrás in the following operating companies: Telecomunicações de Santa Catarina S.A. (Telesc), Telecomunicações de Goiás S.A. (Telegoiás), Telecomunicações de Brasília S.A. (Telebrasília), Telecomunicações do Mato Grosso S.A. (Telemat), Telecomunicações do Mato Grosso do Sul S.A. (Telems), Telecomunicações de Rondônia S.A. (Teleron), Telecomunicações do Acre S.A. (Teleacre), Compañía Telefônica Melhoramento e Resistência (CTMR), and the company's predecessor, Telecomunicações do Paraná S.A. (Telepar) and CRT, a company formerly controlled by Telefônica S.A. and acquired by Brasil Telecom in July 2000. These companies provided fixed-line telecommunications services in the Federal District and the States of Acre, Rondônia, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul that formed 'Region II'. This area has approximately 41.5 million inhabitants, representing 23.5% of the population of Brazil.
In July 1998, the Federal Government sold all its voting shares in Brasil Telecom Participações to private sector buyers.
As a result of the merger of Telepar, Telesc, Telegoiás, Telebrasília, Telemat, Telems, Teleron, Teleacre, CTMR, and CRT, ultimately turning into Brasil Telecom Participações' subsidiary, Brasil Telecom SA, Brasil Telecom became the leading local and intraregional fixed-line telecommunications service provider in Region II.
In January 2004, Brasil Telecom received certification by Brazil's telecommunications regulator, Anatel, that it had accomplished its universalisation targets and was authorised to offer local, domestic, and international fixed-line telephone services, originating inside or outside Region II. The company was also granted authorisation to launch mobile communications services in Region II.
Brasil Telecom Participações SA's shares are traded on the main stock exchanges in Brazil and its American depositary rights (ADRs) are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
As of September 30, 2005, Solpart Participações held 51.0% of the common shares of Brasil Telecom Participações. Tesouraria held 1.1% of the common shares and the remaining 47.9% were held by other shareholders.
